About the Presentation
Voloshyn Gallery will present work by Abi Shehu, Yarema Malashchuk, and Roman Khimei in a group presentation at Independent.
Abi Shehu’s photographic work from the series Affection explores the nature of human character through a visual exploration of spaces. Portrayed through mirrors, as a way to clone oneself, the series focuses on personas, reflections, and contemplation. In an age of widespread global instability, the notion of inner exploration is timely and instructive.
In their work You Shouldn't Have to See This, Yarema Malashchuk and Roman Khimei filmed Ukrainian children who were deported to Russia and later returned to Ukraine. Russia has been deporting children from Ukraine to its territories since 2014, the beginning of the Russo-Ukrainian war, and estimates of the numbers of such cases range from 20,000 to over one million. Malashchuk and Khimei courageously draw attention to this war crime by portraying childhood during the war.
