About the Presentation
Vito Schnabel Gallery will present a selection of portraits by Andy Warhol (1928-87) from the 1970s and 1980s, curated by Bob Colacello, a close collaborator and friend of the artist. Colacello was the editor of Warhol’s Interview magazine from 1970 to 1983 and his 1990 memoir of that period, Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close Up, was described by The New York Times as “the best-written and the most killingly observed” book about the artist. At the Factory, Colacello was involved in inviting celebrities, socialites, artists, and other figures to be the subjects of Warhol’s commissioned portraits, which helped to sustain the artist’s various enterprises. Warhol chose a uniform square format, 40 by 40 inches, for the society portraits, imagining that one day they would be combined together into “one big painting called ‘Portrait of Society’.”
