Presentation Details
Various Small Fires will present a solo show of new works by Wendy Park. Catalyzed by the recent passing of her father in 2019, her paintings capture bittersweet childhood memories of her parents’ pursuit of the American dream during the 1980s and 1990s. Paying homage to their experiences as first-generation Korean immigrants and working-class vendors in Los Angeles, Park’s gaze zooms in on objects associated with the family’s labor at swap meets as well as snatched moments of leisure at the end of the working day. By sharing fragments of her personal reminiscences in high-key color, Park seeks to honor the communities in which she grew up and bring a greater sense of awareness to others.

About the Gallery
Various Small Fires is a gallery owned and operated by Esther Kim Varet established in 2012 with locations in Los Angeles, California and Seoul, South Korea. The gallery’s program reflects our strong desire to be a much-needed platform for artists exercising their voice on the most important social, political, and environmental issues that threaten humans and the greater life web today. VSF has nearly 5,000 sq-ft of exhibition space, a sound corridor for audio art and an outdoor gallery for large-scale sculpture and installation. The gallery uses 100% solar energy to operate its exhibition spaces and goes to great lengths to reduce our carbon footprint and eliminate plastic by-products. In April 2019, VSF opened a second location in Seoul to introduce significant American artists to Asia.
