About the Gallery
Tomio Koyama Gallery opened in 1996 in Saga-cho, Koto-ku, Tokyo. Currently based in Roppongi, Tennoz, and Maebashi, the gallery opened a new space in Kyobashi in November 2024, establishing it as its fourth location. Since its opening the gallery has been participating in international art fairs, being the first point of introduction for young Japanese artists, and has generated a current that became a foundation of Japanese contemporary art. The gallery currently represents Kishio Suga, Mika Ninagawa, Hiroshi Sugito, and Richard Tuttle, as well as holding exhibitions of ceramic artists. Introducing diverse artists from established figures to young talents, beyond distinctions of nationality or genre, Tomio Koyama Gallery aims at developing the contemporary art market with original perspectives.
About the Presentation
Tomio Koyama Gallery will present work by Rika Minamitani in a solo presentation, marking Minamitani’s New York debut. The practice of the young Japanese artist reflects an interest in the interplay between narrative human relationships and geometric spatial compositions. Having earned her MFA in oil painting from Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School in 2023, had her first solo show with the gallery that same year. Minamitani explores varying senses of speed and space by combining dynamic brushstrokes on the canvas with her new experiments in cutwork techniques. Her solo will debut recent works that depict her expressive, cartoonish characters that are inspired by the early foreign animated short films she loved as a child, as well as scenes and expressions depicted in ukiyo-e prints, and the dynamic movements of Bunraku (traditional Japanese puppet theater).
