About the Gallery
The Modern Institute was founded in Glasgow in 1997 by Toby Webster. Working with former Tramway director Charles Esche (now the director of the Van Abbemuseum) and curator Will Bradley, Webster originally established the gallery to support contemporary Scottish artists and to bring the work of leading artists from abroad to Glasgow. In 2006, Andrew Hamilton joined the gallery as a partner. The Modern Institute currently works with 42 international artists, including Turner Prize winners Martin Boyce, Richard Wright, and Simon Starling, as well as major emerging and established artists from Britain and abroad, such as Jim Lambie, Cathy Wilkes, Urs Fischer, Luke Fowler, and Nicolas Party. Working on both public and private exhibitions with its artists worldwide, The Modern Institute hosts exhibitions, performances, and events across its two spaces in Glasgow, and publishes artists books and monographs.
