About the Gallery
The Approach is co-directed by Jake Miller and Emma Robertson. Located in Bethnal Green above The Approach Tavern, for over twenty-five years it has operated an internationally recognised programme from its East London base. The gallery is known for discovering artists and establishing their careers as well as making intergenerational curated group shows a strong focus.

About the Presentation
The Approach will present new paintings by British painter John Maclean (b. 1972) at Independent. Working from details of vintage postcards, Maclean’s watercolour paintings depict serene landscapes of snow-covered forests, lush foliage and radiant skies. He uses a layering technique, applying paint before sanding to create "ghost images" over which he paints anew. Maclean's works on paper, also on display, are made by painting over found photographs of the night sky to create works that sit in between photography and painting.
