About the Gallery
In accordance with Andy Warhol’s will, the mission of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts is the advancement of the visual arts.
The grantmaking program is the heart of the Foundation’s work, distinguished by nearly 40 years of enduring impact in support of artists and having awarded more than $300 million in cash grants to over 1,000 arts organizations across 49 states and abroad. The Foundation's licensing program further extends the spirit of Warhol’s practice, embodying his fusion of art and commerce through a leading and highly distinctive model that brings artists’ work to new audiences and generations in unprecedented ways. Complementing these efforts, the Foundation’s scholarly initiatives advance rigorous research on Warhol’s oeuvre, including ongoing catalogue raisonné projects that deepen understanding of Warhol's legacy.
About the Presentation
The Andy Warhol Foundation will present work by Andy Warhol in a solo presentation at Independent 20th Century. Andy Warhol: Love, Sex, and Desire features a selection of the artist's drawings of men from the 1950s which illustrate acts of quiet but radical resistance. Created at a time when homosexuality was criminalized in every U.S. state, these intimate works from the collection of The Andy Warhol Foundation transform private desire into a public assertion of dignity, visibility, and nonconformity, asserting love and eroticism as forms of personal and political freedom.
