About the Gallery
Superhouse is a New York-based gallery dedicated to design and fine craft, presenting contemporary and historical works. Founded and directed by Stephen Markos, the gallery’s programming is anchored in a deep understanding and appreciation of design and art history. With a focus on contemporary design, studio craft, and American art furniture from the late 20th century, Superhouse curates exhibitions and events that explore the intersection of material, technology, function, and narrative. Its diverse roster of artists and designers spans Africa, the Americas, and Europe, bringing global perspectives to the gallery’s community.
About the Presentation
Superhouse will debut at Independent with a solo presentation featuring work by Dan Friedman. Bringing together a rare concentration of these works, the presentation marks the first time since Friedman’s 1985 exhibition at Fun Gallery that such a substantial group of his assemblage works has been presented publicly.
Long underrecognized within the histories of American art and design, Friedman’s practice has come into renewed focus only in recent years. This presentation responds to that reassessment by foregrounding the assemblages as a central site of his thinking and making, rather than a peripheral or transitional body of work. Created at a pivotal moment in his career, the assemblages chart the development of Friedman’s experimental graphic language, merging day-glo painted found objects with repeating symbology including pyramids, eyes, telephones, and graphic explosions. The works collapse distinctions between design, sculpture, and painting, translating graphic urgency into materially charged, spatial compositions.
