About the Gallery
SHRINE is an art gallery in New York City dedicated to the promotion and exhibition of emerging contemporary artists, both trained and self-taught, and American art brut.
The gallery was founded by Scott Ogden in early 2016, and its first home was a 160 square foot storefront on an off street in the Lower East Side. After eight years of growth and learning, the gallery expanded its footprint into a 4,000 square foot flagship storefront space in Tribeca.
About the Presentation
SHRINE will debut at Independent with a solo presentation featuring work by Laura Footes. There is a celebration of movement and its inherent transience in Laura Footes’ paintings, born from a life challenged by chronic illness since childhood. Paint and painting offer Footes the freedom and tools to inhabit a parallel reality with a functioning body that she can place into any space or time she desires. Laura's artistic practice is increasingly proving to be the antidote to the repetitive experiences of stillness during convalescence and recovery that she has become all too familiar with, and her visions recorded in paint transcend her body's limitations, exploring a limitless psychic landscape with alternative realities. Using the canvas as a microscope, Laura Footes confronts and deconstructs the unseen truths and hardships of her everyday life in her works; however, through changing the narrative of her own life and exploring what else could have been, she finds the ultimate escape from her ongoing personal battles and health issues.
