About the Presentation
SCHENKWEITZDÖRFER will present work by A.R. Penck in a solo presentation at Independent 20th Century. Penck occupies a crucial position within postwar Western art. While often associated with Neo-Expressionism, his work resists purely emotional or subjective readings. Instead, it bridges expression and concept, intuition and structure. His influence can be traced across European painting, yet his approach also resonates strongly with American artistic traditions — from the symbolic abstraction of Cy Twombly to the raw visual language of Jean-Michel Basquiat, and the systems-based thinking of Conceptual Art. Presenting A.R. Penck’s work in New York is essential to fully understanding its scope and relevance. His art should not be confined to a European or Cold War narrative; rather, it gains new urgency when viewed within an American context shaped by questions of power, individual agency, surveillance, and social dynamics. In the United States, Penck’s visual language reveals itself not as a historical artifact, but as a living system — one that continues to speak to contemporary global realities. 

About the Gallery
SCHENKWEITZDÖRFER is a continuation and expansion of Galerie Brigitte Schenk, founded by Brigitte Schenk, the mother of gallery director Joana Weitzdörfer. Since taking over the gallery in September 2025, Weitzdörfer has established SCHENKWEITZDÖRFER as a bridge between past and future, with selected artists from Galerie Brigitte Schenk naturally continuing as part of the new program. The gallery’s focus lies on contemporary emerging artists working with media that have so far received limited attention within the art scene. SCHENKWEITZDÖRFER is dedicated to fostering these artistic positions and to paving the way for such media to become an integral part of art history.
