Nicola Vassell Gallery will show Elizabeth Schwaiger’s spectral paintings, suggestive of the interplay of unseen forces that govern our world. Schwaiger’s research-based practice explores invisible power dynamics and conflicting realities through the use of fractured and overlaid perspectives, gestural brushwork, incandescent lighting, and the symbolism of water. Themes of environmental and political crises haunt her mysterious interior scenes, which shift between the recognizable and the uncanny. Schwaiger’s luxurious empty rooms are filled with art and objects, evoking museum halls and artists’ studios abandoned in the aftermath or foreshadowing of an unnamed disaster.
