About the Gallery
Nicola Vassell Gallery is a contemporary art gallery committed to discourse that widens the lens of the history and future of art. Its focus is on developing and inter-generational, cross-disciplinary program of international artists and thinkers.

About the presentation
Nicola Vassell Gallery presents a selection of recent work by the multidisciplinary artist Adebunmi Gbadebo. After uncovering records documenting her family’s enslavement at indigo and rice plantations in South Carolina in the 19th century, Gbadebo created work with donated hair and gathered cotton, indigo, rice, water, earth, and primary source documents from these plantations. “My ancestors’ bodies, their flesh, their blood, the violence they endured, the trees that witnessed that violence, conversations of escape, and worshiping in secret—all of that went back to the earth,” says Gbadebo.
