About the Presentation
Terry Atkinson will make his New York debut in a solo presentation with Josey, a first-time exhibitor at Independent. An important British artist of his generation, Atkinson was nominated in 1985 for the Turner Prize. Atkinson was a founding member of the group Fine-Artz (1963), and the influential collective Art & Language (1968-74), producing conceptual, collaborative works. Since 1975, he has exhibited his own, often political, work including at the 1984 Venice Biennale curated by Maurizio Calvesi. This solo will display drawings from Atkinson’s recent Frontispiece series, bitterly ironising the life of an artist, alongside new works depicting cultural icons in his American Heads series and a newly fabricated Grease Work sculpture.
