About the Presentation
Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel will present the precisely delineated, Pop-inflected paintings of the Brazilian artist Wanda Pimentel (1943-2019). Having trained in Rio de Janeiro with Ivan Serpa, the founder of the Grupo Frente movement associated with concrete art, Pimentel emerged as an important exponent of Brazil’s New Figuration. Her 1960s and 70s series Envolvimento (Involvement) combined fragments of female bodies and household objects within claustrophobic domestic interiors charged with latent sexual energy. Beneath the Pop colors was a political message: Pimentel’s critique of consumerism and patriarchy at the time of Brazil’s repressive military dictatorship. The artist’s oeuvre became darker and more diagrammatic in the 1980s and 1990s, further meditating on the boundary between interior and exterior and her central themes of oppression and confinement. Independent 20th Century will mark the first solo presentation of Pimentel’s work in the United States.
