About the Gallery
Craig Starr Gallery is an art gallery in New York City, located on the Upper East Side. Founded by Craig F. Starr in 2004 with the inaugural exhibition Jasper Johns: Numbers, the gallery specializes in Modern and Post-war American and European art. Craig Starr Gallery is committed to showcasing intellectually enriching, museum-quality exhibitions, and is consistently called a "jewel-box gallery" by critics. Its program includes art historical presentations, such as Eva Hesse and Sol LeWitt, Barnett Newman Paintings, and Jasper Johns: Crosshatch.
The gallery’s recent shows include Stanley Whitney Henri Matisse, Myron Stout and Cycladic Art, Ray Johnson: Paintings and Collages 1950-66, and Edward Hopper as Puritan. Many of these shows are composed of significant loans, made possible by the generosity of artists, collectors, foundations, and institutions, including Agnes Gund, Beth Rudin DeWoody, Emily Rauh Pulitzer, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, and Art Institute of Chicago.
In addition to these loan shows, the gallery works directly with artists to curate focused exhibitions. Examples include Christo, Mel Bochner, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Peter Halley, and Richard Serra.
