About the Gallery
Cibrián is a contemporary art gallery, established in 2018, based in San Sebastián, Spain. Our exhibition program is shaped by our geographic context, and the entire economy of the gallery and its balance depends on our ability to rethink the modes of production and exhibition, creating a new audience and expectations. To do so, we invite emerging and established artists to work with local resources and knowledge. We hope that the resulting ecology opens up new critical resources to both the local communities and the artists.

About the Presentation
Nooshin Askari will make their New York debut in a solo presentation with Cibrián, a first-time exhibitor at Independent.

Nooshin Askari’s work assumes the deviant and obscene position of ornamentation to trace the potential perversion in form. Through an expanded drawing practice, the artist assembles gestures gathered from poetic, architectural, and visual histories, to shape an attitude that humorously exposes its audience to a space of paranoia and corruption.

For this edition of Independent, Askari presents a series of sculptural framed drawings in the shape of folded papers, each evoking a map while embodying a figure. The artist disorients desire by accentuating the frame as a threshold, where form is both recognized as a navigation tool and devoured into the margins at the same time.
