About the Gallery
Charles Moffett is a New York-based contemporary art gallery located on the second floor of 394 Broadway. Established in 2018, the gallery showcases works by both mid-career and emerging artists, with a focus on modern and contemporary painting, sculpture, and installation. The gallery programs eight to ten exhibitions per year, working in collaboration with curators, writers, other galleries, and institutions to support the visions of the ten artists the gallery represents. Charles Moffett is a member of the New Art Dealers Alliance, Galleries Commit and the Gallery Climate Coalition.
About the Presentation
Charles Moffett will present tapestries from the estate of Silvia Heyden in a solo presentation at Independent. Throughout her life, Heyden relentlessly pursued a practice that recalled pre-medieval tapestry techniques. This working method went against the prevailing zeitgeist of tapestry toward mass production and the grid informed by the Bauhaus. Although her work was previously dismissed as decorative craft, artists living today have fully embraced fiber as a contemporary artistic medium. Free from the rigid dichotomy of art or craft, Heyden’s tapestries can now be reevaluated and further contextualized among the artists of her time for her ability to further expand the medium’s potential for vibrant expression, intrinsic rhythm, and visual complexity.
