About the Gallery
Callirrhoë serves as a gallery for contemporary art, blending elements of an art association to foster connections between art and society. It provides a platform for artists, thinkers, and all those engaged in current discourses, addressing questions that arise in our rapidly changing era. Exhibitions are curated around these themes, aiming to deepen our understanding of art's impact on society and its role in shaping collective consciousness and memory. The space not only showcases group exhibitions focused on these issues but also features solo exhibitions by emerging Greek contemporary artists, with the broader ambition to promote Greek art internationally through collaborations abroad. The name "Callirrhoë", derived from Greek roots meaning "beautiful flow", reflects the natural outpouring of artistic expression and ideas that the space seeks to cultivate. The space was founded in November 2020 and is run by Olympia Tzortzi.
About the Presentation
Callirrhoë will present work by Nikolas Ventourakis in a solo presentation, marking Ventourakis’s New York debut. Ventourakis’s practice operates between art and documentation, questioning the limits of the photographic image. Presented through large-scale installations and multimedia compositions, his work embraces ambiguity, where the familiar is shaped by personal and social memory rather than objective truth. The artist has been commissioned by Independent to expand on one of his earlier photographs to create an immersive installation at the fair’s entrance. Blowing up the image, which depicts a giant pile of trash in the streets of Athens, and removing it from its original context almost to the point of abstraction, will set a dystopic tone for the arrival of Independent’s guests.
