About the Presentation
Beck & Eggeling’s presentation at Independent 20th Century will feature the rediscovery of early works by Hal Busse (1926-2018) alongside artists from the ZERO movement including Heinz Mack, Otto Piene, Günther Uecker, and Yves Klein. ZERO was formed in Düsseldorf in 1957 as “a zone of silence and of pure possibilities for a new beginning in art” after the ravages of the Second World War. Founded by Mack and Piene, who were later joined by Uecker, the group evolved into an international network of artists in Europe, Japan, and North and South America. Busse came into contact with ZERO during a fertile period in her creative development, based in Stuttgart in the late 1950s. Although her work diverged from the group by never completely abandoning the figure, she shared their interest in dynamic structures, grid patterns, monochromes, and the use of nails. Like many women artists of the post-war generation, Busse’s contributions have been overlooked by conventional art history and are now beginning to receive due recognition.
