About the Gallery
Addis Fine Art is a leading African contemporary art gallery based in Addis Ababa. The gallery was founded in 2016 by Rakeb Sile and Mesai Haileleul, with a focus on artists from Ethiopia, the Horn of Africa, and its diasporas. Since then, it has championed African artists on the international stage and established itself as a significant voice in the contemporary African art market, with Artsy dubbing it one of the “Most Important Young Galleries in the World” (Artsy 2019). It has developed an international programme showcasing emerging and mid-career artists. The gallery's Addis Ababa location has evolved into a regional incubator for undiscovered talent, exhibiting and developing the careers of emerging artists. Working alongside other local galleries and foundations, Addis Fine Art works to promote sustainable art ecosystems from the continent.

About the Presentation
Amel Bashier will make her New York debut in a solo presentation with Addis Fine Art, a first-time exhibitor at Independent.

The work of Sudanese artist Amel Bashier (b. 1981) is inspired by the wisdom and strength of her female ancestors, particularly those who struggled and fought for their rights. She uses their stories both as a source of vitality for her creative process, and as a point of comparison to the continued battle of the modern-day Sudanese women's rights movement. Now based in France after spending her formative years between Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Port Sudan, the artist has created her latest intricately detailed works on paper and canvas as a means of investigating the complexity of human relationships and the emotions that are born from them, the fortitude and perseverance of women, and the unjust toll that conflict takes on the innocent.
