The artist Squeak Carnwath is this week’s featured guest on the Voices on Art podcast, created in collaboration with Independent 20th Century. The Oakland-based painter and printmaker will be exhibiting her rarely seen works from the 1990s at the fair with Jane Lombard Gallery. In this episode she reflects on her discovery of artmaking as a child, the rebellious act of becoming a woman artist, and what it takes to make art on a psychological and material level. Carnwath’s works are a hybrid between recognizable images, text, and abstraction. She is not interested in replicating what she sees, but considers painting as a kind of “spiritual extension of the soul.”
